Review :

A Disappointment

I saw the pre-release version of Wish I was Here at Sundance and could hardly believe it was written by the same person who wrote Garden State. It's so trite and disenchanting. Zach Braff said he wrote this with his brother, at times by sending emails back and forth, and I am seeing that this long-distance collaboration definitely does not work. I was so disappointed, as I think many Garden State fans will be, because it has more in common with silly television sitcoms than with heartfelt, intelligent, dramatic comedy films. I could hardly sit through the entire film. I felt I was watching a series of skits run together that were very disconnected. After screening this film, I had the pleasure of viewing another film written and directed by an actor who also starred in his own film: Rudderless with William H Macy. The two films were like night and day. Both are dramatic comedies, but Rudderless was heartfelt, intelligent, and focused. The characters were believable and well-acted, and the script was expertly written. Zach and his brother should watch Rudderless, then take another look at their script for some heavy rewriting before release.
